Are You Up On...

We at RatherUniqueFLA pride ourselves on being up on new or slept on local and national acts. Every week we're going to get you familiar by providing a profile and example for best new or unheralded artists.

Week 1 Artist:

Miami has more to offer than just base, cocaine tales and club music. QuEST, the 19 year old Miami native is solidifying himself as a testament to the previous statement. Make no mistake about it, as far as lyricism is concerned, QuEST is probably the best "New Generation" cat FLA has to offer.

The tape that really lifted my ears was his "Distant Travels into Soul Theory". In this mixtapes, that plays like and album, he loops countless soul classics one may/should be familiar with through sampling. This concept album is based on a relationship gone wrong and thus leading him into some hard times. It can get kind of mushy so be prepared for sorrow induced rhymes about manning up and asking the girl out, finding love, and subsequently losing it. It is definitely worth the download and thrusts him on the radar for his next big endeavor.

Back After a Long Hiatus

It's been a while since our last post huh? That last Halloween post took a lot out of me. I'm just playing, but I'm back at it and will post more often for the foreseeable future.

With all that being said, we're beefing up the shop for 2011. We're looking to go heavy into vintage wear and other accessories. We dabbled with jackets and the snapbacks but we're going all out for next year. Expect tailored garments, vintage denims and unique accessories.

Too old for Halloween?...Nah

So Halloween is coming up, and there are plenty of good costume parties to crash. Kinda looking forward to it this year for whatever reasons. I'm still not concrete on what I want to be though.

Option #1: Character from "The Warriors"

Option #2: Crazy88 Gang

Both choices are great picks. On one hand, you have a 70's cult classic and on the other, a stylish new classic. Both are dope because friends can be part of your gang. I'm still mulling over this decision but will post picks when it all goes down.

Members Only!!!

My friend Kerry + Cheap Bottle of Wine + Dope, Vintage Members Only Jackets= Impromtu photo shoot. We have various colors and sizes for these bad boys. The jackets are unisex but in these pics, Kerry has on a Men's medium. I for one, happen to like the baggy look on women. That just may be me though.

These jackets should be available in The Shop before the day is over.

Its about that time...

Yup, time for the annual FSU/Miami battle, this time in Miami. Even though I've been a lifelong FSU fan, you have to still respect UM. Both squads have had so many talented players that go on to be stars on the next level....can't say I feel the same about UF or their fans.

My prediction: FSU 28

UM 17

Wiz Khalifa X YELAWOLF in Tallahassee Nov. 3 @ Potbelly's

I missed the last two times Wiz came to Tally. My kinfolk went to both and they said that it was great seeing his fan base blossom between the first and the second show. Now Wiz has a nationwide following of flyboys and kushblowers. His last mixtape, "Kush & Orange Juice" is an underground smash but I'm sure you're aware of that. Yelawolf has been coming on strong as of late. I really appreciate his rapping point of view. He's coming from the country (Alabama to be exact) and a lot of us can identify some of the ass backwards scenarios he puts in his songs. He was recently featured on Big Boi's latest album Sir Lucious LeftFoot: Son of Chico Dusty

You can bet we're gonna be there and you can also bet there's gonna be hella trees in the air...

Taylor Gang or... walk around in Cleveland with Lebron. you come up with your own absurd way to die.

Dom Kennedy in S. Florida

Dom Kennedy stops in Dade County to perform and talk about his plans for the future, the West Coast, why he isn’t signed yet and more. If you haven't took the time to listen to that "From the Westside with Love" mixtape, do so. In the interview he speaks on not rushing to throw out a major album before he masters his craft. I hope many more artists take this approach in the future.

1. In Memory Of
2. Still Me
3. 1997
4. Home Alone
5. Choose Up
6. The 4 Heartbeats (ft. Ovedoz)
7. Locals Only
8. Play On (ft. SKeme)
9. The Hotels (ft. Carter)
10. Love The Future
11. Room 323 Intermission
12. She Go (ft. Polyester)
13. Speaker Phone (Dial 143)

True Story

It's the first time I've heard anything from this cat Narcisyst, but this is an example of an artist unifying and educating through music. In case you've been living under the proverbial rock these past few months, I'll give you the rundown of this ramped Islamphobia that has engulfed this country. Many backwards bumpkins and rich rightwingers have taken a stance on all things Islamic, no matter what the cause. Many have long since accused the President for being Muslim(So what if he is Muslim in Faith) Fox News builds their whole programing mix on the notion that they can terrify Americans(it's working)on rather pedestrian issues including religion.

Recently, a proposed Mosque was in talks to be built near the 9/11 site. Of course media pundits jumped at the occasion to blast their fear tactics and scare up enough sentiment for a full fledged phobia of anything Islamic. If some American's weren't already hesitant enough to walk along side any olive skinned human being before, they definitely are now.

Now we have an organized Quran burning scheduled to take place in Gainsville, FL. Those same citizens probably didn't want me swimming in the same pool or drinking out of the same water fountain as them. Sheer ridiculousness and ignorance comes to mind when I think about this whole issue.

Rather Unique FLA is sponsoring a cookout @220 Lipona Road (right behind Gordos on Pensacola)in Tallahassee, this Sunday. Stop through and chill with us. There's gonna be all type of food, drinks and other goods. Just mention the code word, Rather Unique FLA, at the door and you're welcome to drop through.

I posted 2 vids today. The first one has "barbecue" in the title, so it was fitting. Not only did it have "barbecue" in the title, but it was the song that unleashed Nas to the world. The lethal first verse at 19 years old basically changed hip-hop forever.
The second vid is by Doc. Dre and Snoop. This song and video just made the Left Coast look sooo chill. It had one of the best barbecue scenes in Rap history.

Around Town

Ran across some cool murals at the Tallahassee Skate Park. I tried to brave near 100 degree heat one morning last week but it just wasn't happening. I went back later and cruised the concrete for a good while. I don't know if you've visited this park yet, but for no charge you get a damn good park.

Back from the Left Coast

As of right now, I'm waiting in Santa Barbara's pint sized airport dreading the upcoming work schedule, but this past week in Cali was well worth it. I didn't get to do everything (play ball at Venice Beach ala "White Men Cant Jump") or see everyone I wanted(due to space and time), but it was a solid trip.

This is a track off of Dela's "Atmosphere Airlines Vol 2" featuring Blu. Blu is the West Coast's and more specifically Cali's lyrical champion. You can bet this saw heavy rotation during my trip.

1. Welcome Back
2. Multi Barz Of Fury (Remix) – CL Smooth
3. Work It Out (Remix) – Q-tip
4. P.S.A (Elemental)
5. My Nigga – Elzhi (from the album Changes Of Atmosphere)
6. My Style Is Fly (Unreleased Mix) – Jazz Lib feat. Fatlip
7. Party & Bullshit (Remix) – Biggie
8. The Bullshit 2k9 – G.Slim
9. Long Life (Remix) – Talib Kweli
10. Mars – Blu
11. The Sag – Aloe Blacc
12. The Sidewalks (Dela’s City Mix) – J-Live
13. Trigger Happy Police
14. Motown 2k9 – Finale
15. All I Know – Reach
16. It’s Love (Remix) – DJ Tonk feat. Noelle Scaggs
17. Stressed Out (Remix) – A Tribe Called Quest
18. La Voix Claire (Remix) – Dany Dan
19. The Pursuit – Supastition & Brotha Soul

This Mixtape is definitely worth the download
